Summary
The Problem
Solution
Introduced features that helped the dog owners with their dogs' health and behavior analysis using AI.
Background
To grow the business and establish itself in the dog health domain Furtrieve aims to pivot its direction. They aim to develop a new product, 'Furtrieve Health,' an app enabling users to track their pets' health by monitoring behavior, weight, food intake, and activity tracking.
Transforming Furtrieve from a tracking app to one with health monitoring one using AI
Currently, the Furtrieve app allows users to track their dogs if they buy their collar with a monthly subscription with no health monitoring capabilities.
User Research
Survey
I contacted 100 pet owners to gain insight into their experience with the vet and what they would like to know about their pet's health.
I discovered that pet owners misdiagnosed their dog’s health at least once. The pet owners reported that their dogs have special dietary needs.
Pet owners Interviews
Pet owners currently lack a simple way to document and track their pets' medical issues
I interviewed 4 pet owners who were recruited from survey applicants as well as my apartment complex.
Using an affinity diagram, I noticed these 3 majors' similar problems with pet owners:
Needs based on medical history
Dietary needs of a dog will change based on its age, breed, and medical condition(pregnancy)
Breed specific health problems
Some dog breeds have inherent health problems and dietary issues
Difficulty detecting health issues
Most owners can't detect health issues from the get-go.
Define
Pet owner Persona
Based on insights gained through user interviews and surveys, I developed a persona to better understand the perspective of pet owners basic understanding of the Dog Health Domain space.
How Might We framework
I used the following how might we to reframe my insights from research into opportunities to spark ideas.
Ideate
Brainstorming exercise
Brainstorming Ideas
I generated multiple ideas during this exercise. Since this was an open problem, I didn't have much insight into what the features would be, so I generated ideas in abundance.
After evaluating all the ideas based on their feasibility, I down-selected my top 3 ideas below.
Leveraging computer vision for preventive dog care
I created product concepts for all the three ideas to present to my stakeholders to identify the final design direction for Furtreive health.
Initial Sketches
Making an idea into a reality using pen and paper
I sketched multiple ideas for different screens of the app during after our brainstorming session.
Low-fi Wireframes
Conceptualizing sketches to an initial concept
Based on the sketches, I created some quick wireframes and presented them to my client. These wireframes provided the client with an initial concept using which they could provide their feedback.

Reflections
I loved this internship because it taught me how to navigate the challenges of a start-up environment. With limited access to actual product users, I proactively reached out to pet owners to gather valuable insights, leading to actionable design solutions. I also collaborated with the design team and facilitated workshops to create a user-friendly interface.
What would have I done better?
While I learned a great deal from this project, there are areas I wish I could have improved. I would have liked more time to include a user testing phase, which I believe would have added significant value by validating my findings and design solutions. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I couldn’t implement this step.
